Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Rockville Centre Owner’s Guide
A properly fitted Gelco chimney cap installation in Rockville Centre typically runs between $380 and $720 installed, depending on flue count and whether the existing crown needs repair before mounting. We stock Gelco single-flue and multi-flue caps for common sizes and can usually install within a few days of your call. Most Rockville Centre homeowners discover their cap has failed during a heavy rain when water stains appear on the firebox floor, or when a neighbor spots rust streaks running down the brick from the roofline.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco caps fall into three main series you’ll see on Rockville Centre homes: the standard galvanized single-flue caps (model prefix SC), the stainless multi-flue covers (model prefix MC), and the specialty outside-mount models designed for deteriorated crowns (model prefix OM). The SC series fits flues from 8″×8″ up to 13″×18″; the MC series spans 9″×9″ to 17″×21″ for multiple flue pots; the OM line requires crown width and length measurements plus overhang calculation.
To identify your existing Gelco, check the underside of the mesh screen for a stamped model number, or measure your flue’s outside dimensions with a tape measure from the roof. Don’t trust the original builder’s specs, especially in the older colonials near Hempstead Avenue where we’ve found three different flue sizes on supposedly identical houses. Gelco’s stainless models carry a lifetime warranty against rust-through; the galvanized carry 7 years. We install both OEM Gelco and equivalent-grade stainless caps from our regular inventory. Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco galvanized caps begin showing surface rust at the corners and weld points after 8 to 12 years in Rockville Centre’s salt-air climate. Once the rust reaches the screen mesh, the cap is shedding metal particles into your flue.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A cap that has shifted on its legs, or whose mounting screws have backed out from freeze-thaw cycling, no longer sheds water to the crown. The water follows the flue tile and pools on the hearth.
- Mesh screen detached or sagging. The spark arrestor mesh on Gelco caps is spot-welded to the frame. After years of thermal cycling, these welds fatigue and the screen drops into the flue opening, blocking draft and creating a carbon monoxide hazard.
- Visible gaps between cap legs and flue tile. Settling of the chimney stack, common in the 1920s and 1950s construction around Rockville Centre, can tilt the flue pot enough that the cap no longer seats square. Gaps larger than 3/8″ let in rain and animals.
- Banging or rattling in high wind. A Gelco cap whose mounting hardware has loosened will lift and slam in gusts off the Atlantic. This fatigues the legs and can eventually launch the cap onto your roof or lawn.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Single-flue Gelco cap, stainless, installed | $380 - $520 |
| Multi-flue Gelco cap, stainless, installed | $550 - $720 |
| Crown wash / repair before mounting | $180 - $340 additional |
| Custom-size or outside-mount Gelco | $620 - $890 |
The range reflects three things: how many flues the cap must cover, whether your existing cap left damage that needs fixing first, and whether we can use a standard size or need to order custom. Every Gelco installation includes new mounting hardware rated for the cap weight, a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue interior with photos you can see, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. No surprises on the bill.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check from the ground with binoculars for rust, missing mesh, or obvious tilt. You can also shine a flashlight up the flue from the firebox to spot daylight where the cap should block it. What you should not do is climb a ladder to wrestle with a metal cap in wind, or try to drill into a concrete crown without knowing where the flue liner ends. We’ve replaced caps that fell on owners who underestimated the leverage of a 22-inch stainless hood in a gust off Mill River.
If the cap is simply loose and the mounting surface is sound, we can sometimes re-secure it. If the mesh is failing or the frame is rusted, replacement is the honest call. Call (631) 498-8835 and we’ll give you a straight answer based on what you can see from the ground. Estimates are free.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap typically lasts 20 to 25 years on a Rockville Centre chimney; the galvanized models average 10 to 15 years before rust-through, shorter if you’re within a mile of the water where salt air accelerates corrosion. Call (631) 498-8835 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Re-welding mesh or de-rusting a galvanized cap costs nearly as much as replacement and leaves you with a compromised part; we only recommend repair if the cap is a custom size no longer manufactured and the frame itself is sound. Call (631) 498-8835 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Most Gelco cap replacements take 90 minutes to two hours from ladder set to final photo, including the camera inspection and cleanup; we complete most jobs in a single visit. Call (631) 498-8835 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
We carry stainless single-flue and multi-flue Gelco-compatible caps in the most common sizes on our trucks; custom sizes or outside-mount models typically arrive within three to five business days. Call (631) 498-8835 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
