A family near North Village smelled smoke backing into their living room every time they lit a fire. The flue was packed with last year’s squirrel nest, compacted tight by winter moisture. We cleared the blockage, swept the flue, and found the original cap had rusted through - that’s how they got in. Homeowner in the Estates section near Mill River had been burning unseasoned oak, probably for years. The flue was coated in glazed creosote - shiny, black, rock-hard. Standard brushing just polishes it. We applied a Copperfield powder treatment, let it work for two weeks, then returned with mechanical chain equipment to break the glaze loose and rotary-swept the residue. Two visits, but the alternative was a liner replacement they didn’t need. A square deal: no surprises on the bill.

This 1960s ranch near Sunrise Highway had smoke stains creeping up the brickwork above the firebox every season. The smoke chamber - the area above the damper - was built with corbeled brick, full of gaps and rough edges. Smoke followed the path of least resistance into the walls instead of up the flue. We parged the entire chamber with HeatShield Cerfractory Foam, smoothing the transition and sealing the gaps. The stains stopped. Most jobs completed in a single visit, but this one took a day and a half to cure properly. We’ll be there when we say.

Chimney Liner Debris & Corrosion - Full Flue Restoration, South Side

Our camera inspection on a South Side cape turned up something worse than creosote: a flexible liner that had corroded through in sections, with old mortar and brick debris collecting in the gaps. The homeowner didn’t know. Carbon monoxide can leak through those perforations into living space. We removed the damaged liner, swept the flue, and installed a new DuraFlex 316Ti stainless liner sized precisely to their furnace output.
