Famco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Damper Repair: The Rockville Centre Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible damper repair assemblies for Rockville Centre homes, with most jobs running between $280 and $520 installed depending on model and flue access. Many of the older colonials and capes near Hempstead Avenue and the streets around South Side High School still run original Famco throat dampers from the 1980s and 90s, and we carry the common pivot pins, plates, and replacement frames on our trucks. You’ll know the damper has failed when the handle spins freely, the plate drops crooked, or you feel a cold downdraft even with the fireplace cold.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactured throat dampers in several series over the decades, and the parts are not interchangeable across lines. The cast-iron F Series with the rectangular 8-inch by 12-inch or 10-inch by 14-inch plates are the most common in Rockville Centre’s 1950s through 1970s ranch and split-level stock. The lighter stamped-steel S Series, often found in prefab fireplaces installed during the 1980s and 90s, uses a thinner pivot pin that shears more readily and requires a different replacement kit entirely.

To identify yours, look for a stamped model number on the damper frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight when the plate is open. If the stamping has worn away, measure the plate width and depth, note whether the handle is left- or right-side mounted, and check if the pivot rod is 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch diameter. We match OEM Famco spec hardware where available, but we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Gelco that meet the same ASTM standards and carry the same 90-Day Done Right Promise. The aftermarket route saves roughly $40 to $80 on parts without sacrificing fit, and in our experience, the aftermarket stainless pivot pins outlast the original mild steel in Long Island’s humid coastal air. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider with no affiliation to Famco Manufacturing.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The pivot pin has either corroded through or the internal linkage has slipped its catch. In Rockville Centre, we see this most often on F Series units within three blocks of the bay, where salt air accelerates rust in the firebox throat.
  • The plate sits crooked or falls closed on its own. One of the pivot ears has cracked or the frame has warped from years of heat cycling. A crooked plate cannot seal properly and will leak conditioned air up the flue year-round.
  • You feel a noticeable cold draft when the fireplace is not in use. The plate gasket has deteriorated or the frame has pulled away from the smoke chamber, creating a gap that bypasses the damper entirely. This is the symptom that drives up heating bills fastest.
  • Rust flakes or grit fall into the firebox when you operate the handle. The internal mechanism is actively corroding. Left alone, the pin will seize completely and the plate may drop into the flue, requiring a more involved retrieval.
  • The handle is missing or replaced with a makeshift wire pull. Someone has already attempted a field repair. The original handle geometry matters; an improvised pull puts lateral stress on the pivot and hastens complete failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Rockville Centre, a complete Famco damper replacement typically runs $280 to $520 installed. The lower end covers an S Series swap with straightforward top-down access and an aftermarket equivalent plate. The upper end applies to F Series cast-iron units where the frame has corroded into the smoke chamber masonry and requires refractory repair around the seat, or where the flue is offset and demands extra time to fish the new assembly into position.

Every quote we provide breaks out parts, labor, and any masonry touch-up separately before we start. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our work is covered by the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing. If it needs doing, do it right the first time.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can verify the model stamp, measure the plate, and check whether the handle operates smoothly without disassembling anything. What we do not recommend is removing the damper plate yourself. The assembly sits at the smoke chamber throat, above the firebox and below the flue liner, in a space that is awkward to reach and easy to disturb. A dropped plate can wedge in the flue. A damaged smoke chamber wall can go unnoticed. And if the frame has corroded into the surrounding masonry, the repair extends beyond parts replacement into refractory work that requires proper materials and cure time.

We carry Famco-compatible damper hardware on our trucks and complete most replacements in a single visit. Call (631) 498-8835 for a free estimate with no pressure to book.
